Farm produce from URDAIBAI is renowned for its fine quality. The beans and green peppers of Gernika have their own quality labels Alubias and Pimientos de Gernika. Along with local fish products such as anchovies and white tuna, txakolí wine, cheese and a wide range of fruit and vegetables, they have helped make this an area famous for a cuisine based on top quality local ingredients.
All these items can be purchased at the weekly produce markets in Bermeo (Tuesdays) and Gernika-Lumo (Mondays). Many local towns and villages hold produce fairs during the year where local products can also be bought and tasted. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars in the area where visitors can try local dishes. Given the huge range and number of establishments, visitors are advised to check local tourist information offices for details.
PRODUCE FAIRS AND MARKETS
The produce markets of Bermeo and Gernika-Lumo are well stocked with typical products of the URDAIBAI: area, from local beans and green peppers to fish from Bermeo, traditional craft products, vegetables, cheese, honey and local txakolí wine. As well as these regular weekly markets there are also numerous agricultural produce fairs.
