Landscape

Over the last few years we have gone from the classical conception that understood landscape as an aesthetical background of human activity to the current conception, in which landscape is defined as cultural resource and heritage, thus acquiring a growing considerations within the set of environmental values that society demands. This new conception of landscape as a resource implies its conservation.

The Vice Councillor's Office for the Environment of the Basque Government, in collaboration with the Inter-University Department of Ecology in Madrid, has elaborated a thematic cartography corresponding to the landscape in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country to a 1:25.000 scale. This study shows visual basins, intrinsic landscape units and points of landscape incidence. At present, the Biodiversity Directorate, in accordance with the commitments of the Environmental Framework Programme is working on the collaboration of a Catalogue of Especially Noteworthy and Singular Landscapes in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country.
